During the American Civil War President Lincoln visited a camp hospital to comfort the wounded soldiers. There he saw a sixteen-year-old boy who was about to die. Taking the soldier’s hands, Lincoln asked, “What can I do for you, my boy?”
The soldier responded, “Would you write a letter to my mother for me?” Lincoln got pen and paper and wrote a long letter at his dictation.
Then he asked, “Is there anything else I can do for you?” “Won’t you stay with me?” the boy pleaded. “I want to hold your hand.”
Lincoln realized that the soldier was afraid to die, so he sat by the bed and held his hand. After two hours the breathing stopped. Lincoln folded the soldier’s arms across his breast and left the hospital weeping.
