Calvin Coolidge was governor of a large state in America when the police decided to strike. Whenever the police go on strike there is rioting and looting. Coolidge said, “There is no right to strike against the public safety by anyone, anywhere!”
He announced that he would call in the National Guard to protect the public. A delegation from the police threatened him, “If you spoil our strike by calling in the National Guard, we will ruin you. You will be finished politically.”
Coolidge looked at them straight in the eye and answered, “Gentlemen, that doesn’t matter! The safety of the people is more important to me than my career.”
That night Coolidge wrote to his father: “I know my political career is finished, but I had to do what was right.”
The police went on strike. Coolidge called in the National Guard to maintain order. News of his brave action made headlines across the country. People admired him for his courage. A few years later he became president of the United States.

Evil thrives when good people do nothing.
A nation’s destiny depends upon the character of its leading.
Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave, just as I did not come to be served, but to serve, and to sacrifice my life to save the world.” Jesus (Matthew 20:26-28)
Leaders are given power not to make money or to become famous. There is only one just use of power-to serve the people. (George Bush)
God must have loved the common people - He made so many of them! (Abraham Lincoln)
The purpose of leaders is to serve the common people, not to be served by them.
Governments, police, the military, schools, and hospitals all exist to serve people.
The storm blows more fiercely upon the tree on the mountaintop than upon the lily in the valley. (A person in high position has more opportunities to be corrupted than the humble worker down below.)
